The game of billiards has been around for a long time. There have been records of the first known indoor billiard table dating back to the 1400s. So, there’s no question that the game of billiards is an old game.

Standard equipment for the game of billiards is:

1. billiard balls
2. cue
3. pool table

Billiard balls can vary from game to game in size and design. There’s a whole separate industry based on just varying design of billiard balls.

Billiard tables come in varying sizes and styles as well. Most tables are 7, 8, or 9 footers. On average pool halls tend to have larger (9 foot) tables. Smaller establishments like your local bar will typically have a 7 foot table.

The cue, which many argue is the most important piece of equipment, come in varying weights, sizes, and styles. There’s no limit to the amount of custom work that you could have done to your cue, and this little piece of equipment in itself is a thriving sales item.

The game of billiards brings together a diverse group of people who do not have to possess an enormous amount of talent or money to play. Granted, there are extremely skillful billiard players, but for the most part average patrons make up a large population of billiards players. It is game that can be played at all ages throughout one’s life and is one that can be very fulfilling. In addition to being a competitive sport, the game of billiards can be very satisfying when played solitarily.

There are many variations of billiard games; however the most common in non-tournament play is eight ball. Any televised billiard event will most notably be a nine ball tournament. Nine ball game play being a more strategic game, thus requiring more skill and attentiveness from the players.
