The Best Way To Stop Dog Play Biting

Your puppy's nipping and play biting may seem harmless to you now but what you do if it developed into a more serious biting problem when your dog grows up? You would be constantly on edge in case your dog was to bite someone. It's extremely important to a stop your dog play biting as soon as possible!

FROM BIRTH TO LEAVING THE LITTER

When they are still with the rest of the litter, puppies will use their mouths to communicate. Dog play biting is a common form of puppy play within the pack. If a puppy bites another pup too hard, the puppy will yelp and this is how they learn when they've gone too far.

WHEN YOU BRING YOUR PUPPY HOME

Once you bring your puppy home and he joins his new 'pack', it's up to you to make him realise that YOU are the leader of the pack. If he nips or bites you, let out a high pitched yelp. Turn around and ignore your dog rather than tell him off and shout at him. Other ways of showing that you're the leader of the pack are to ensure that you and your family eats before your dog.

When your puppy is still under 15 weeks old, you need to encourage licking as a good, friendly way of using their mouth. Reward them when they stop nipping and start licking. Rub something on your hand that your dog would like so they will lick it off! It's important not to be too aggressive at this stage as this will encourage aggressive behaviour.

Once your puppy is a bit older, they will want to explore even more and they will also start teething. They nip you because their mouth is sore. If this is the reason, you need to ensure your puppy has something to chew to soothe the pain of teething.

IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER WHEN STOPPING YOUR DOG PLAY BITING

#1 Make it clear that you are the leader of the pack.

#2 Praise and reward good behaviour.

#3 Remember that the best way to stop bad behavior is to ignore it and turn the other way. This is what the mother and other puppies do when your puppy was still with the litter.

Big problem two is that no puppy should be away from it's mom this young. Let YOUR dogs play gently with it, but be aware that dachshunds have back troubles, and being too rough with him might hurt him. Do NOT let him anywhere that an unknown dog may have traveled. Parvo is a big threat to such a young puppy as even though he has had one shot, he isn't sufficiently protected until a week or two after his last ones.

Be aware that your pup will need special socialization due to not getting it from his mother. In most states, taking a pup from its mother that young is illegal.
