You Can't Play Billiards Without the Billiard Balls
No one can play billiards if not for the presence of the billiard balls. The essence of billiard game revolves around sinking all these balls in the pockets before your competition does. Hence, if you have to set up your gaming unit, you will have to invest in good quality billiard balls.
Most billiard balls sold in billiard supplies stores are durable and heavy duty. But, be careful as some are made with cheap materials that wouldn't be able to handle the stresses of the game. Even premium ones need replacement from time to time. If you want your pool balls to last longer, you need to know how to give them some care and maintenance like not dropping them on hard surfaces and giving them some thorough clean-up.
Over the course of your playing time, the pool balls will pick up dirt, dust, sweat, oils and chalk. These will make the balls sticky and will greatly influence your game. Instead of rendering precision strikes, the cue stick can slip or wouldn't give the balls a solid hit.
With the importance placed on these essential billiard supplies, a lot of items and accessories are made for their use. There are billiard ball cleaning solutions and polishers that can be used to give your balls a gleaming and thoroughly cleaned surface. For a quick bath, you can place the balls in an automatic ball cleaning machine. Storage is of course very important. If you frequently use the billiard balls, you can have them placed in pool ball trays and stored in cabinets. If you're traveling, there are also carrying cases built for them. These are usually made with hard cases, lined with felt and have secure latches.
Some of these accessories for the balls can be very expensive. While hard core billiard players wouldn't bat an eyelash when it comes to procuring these items, an amateur billiard player may find content in just having a set of billiard balls, tray and some cleaners. Investing in these items, however, will help you achieve a quality game and better protect your valuable

anybody out there know anything about setting up a pool table? particularly setting the slates into place?
so i just got a pretty decent used billiard table the other day. there was no felt on it but i got some new. i am confident i can felt it myself and save $200 they tried to charge for a "proffesional" to come out and do it for me. and thats on top of the $250 i just paid for the felt alone. 450 total just for a sheet of new felt to be tacked to an 8' x 4' flat surface by a "pro"? i think not, so im doing it myself!
now the only thing that i cant figure out is that there appears to be some sort of joint compound that had been used where the slates butt together. like a type of mortar or fix-all type compound ? if anybody the the specific stuff or just what type of product it may be that would all help and would be absolutely awesome!
Spend the extra $200 - and watch carefully, then you do it yourself next time!
The initial setup is the most difficult. If you insist upon doing it your self, check the compound to see if water softens it. If so, remove it (it will be DuRoc water soluble putty), if it does not soften, you are probably in trouble (it is Bondo and will chip the slate when you remove it). Be very careful when you are setting it up and leveling the bed. I would recommend using beeswax to fill the joints unless you live in a hot environment, then the DuRoc is best (IMO).

I have not seen this book myself, but I've heard that it is good.

I can no longer recommend this group in general as it has turned into a very sophomoric flame-war battlefield lately. There is some very good information, if you can stand the collateral damage....
